Following the announcement of the preliminary and final election results, unsuccessful candidates of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) for the Iraqi parliament publicly congratulated their fellow candidates and party lists via social media. In contrast, some unsuccessful candidates of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the Badinan region responded with demonstrations, protests, and road blockages, questioning the results.
Among those from the PUK, Dr Hersh Rasul, Dr Bestun Saburawayi, Dr Sharif Shahid Rahim, Dr Narmin Maarouf, Awder Aziz, Raz Sirwan, and several others extended congratulations to the successful candidates and reassured their supporters and the people of Kurdistan that they would continue to serve with commitment wherever they are.
Meanwhile, in Badinan, certain tribes whose candidates were on the KDP list staged protests over what they described as the failure of their candidates. Roads at several border points were blocked in response. According to the protesters, their candidates had received sufficient votes, but the KDP declared them unsuccessful.
The Goran tribe, supporting the KDP’s candidate number 13, blocked the road between Bardarash and Ruvia districts following their candidate’s defeat.
Members of the Silevani tribe also blocked the road between Zakho and Duhok, claiming that the KDP had disregarded their candidate, Dr. Sherzad Zakarya Silevani, replacing him with an unsuccessful nominee despite his reported success.
Similarly, the Mosarasha tribe in Zakho protested the results, which they viewed as unfair to their candidate, blocking the main road to Ibrahim Xalil.
