Mohammed Al-Hassan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, expressed satisfaction on Tuesday with the ongoing parliamentary elections in the country.
Speaking at a press conference, Al-Hassan highlighted that UN officials are deployed across all governorates to monitor the voting process, expressing pleasure with the high voter turnout and the excellent organisation by Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
He added: “What we saw today, and on the special voting day, is evidence of the Commission’s efforts to conduct well-organised elections.” Emphasising the significance of the day, he described it as “a democratic celebration for all Iraqi citizens to freely choose their representatives, reflecting their free will and commitment to democracy.”
Al-Hassan further noted, “Iraqis have affirmed that the voice of the citizen is the source of legitimacy, and that conscious participation is essential for consolidating democracy and strengthening trust in institutions.”
He recalled that UNAMI has supported the organisation of 13 elections over the past two decades, adding, “What we are witnessing today is the fruit of this longstanding cooperation. The United Nations is fully satisfied with the current electoral process and confident that all political parties will maintain a calm atmosphere and respect the will of the Iraqi people.”
He concluded by praising Iraqis for their political awareness and responsibility, stating, “The people of Iraq deserve appreciation and respect for the maturity they have demonstrated today and in the lead-up to the elections. The United Nations stands with Iraq and its citizens, supporting their path toward a more secure and stable environment.”
Voting for Iraq’s parliamentary elections commenced at 7:00 a.m. (local time) on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, and will continue until 6:00 p.m.
A total of 20,263,773 eligible voters are casting their ballots across 18 electoral districts, with 8,703 polling centres and 39,258 polling stations operating nationwide.
Special voting for security forces and internally displaced persons (IDPs) took place on Sunday, recording a turnout of 82.48%.
