PUK's Candidate Carnival in Kirkuk-Saladin Electoral District.
A carnival introducing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) List 222 candidates was held in the Kirkuk-Saladin electoral district of Kirkuk Governorate, bringing together all PUK candidates from the region.
Aso Mamand, Head of the PUK’s Organisations in Kirkuk-Saladin, stressed that sending the largest possible number of representatives to Baghdad will strengthen the Kurdish position at the national level.
“The PUK already holds a strong position in the Kurdistan Region and across Iraq,” Mamand said, “but we will be even stronger if we send more representatives to Baghdad, enabling us to defend the rights of the disputed areas [areas Arabised during the Ba'ath regime rule and are diputed between Erbil & Baghdad] and the Kurdistan Region.”
He added: “We have made significant progress in Kirkuk, yet there is more work to be done to strengthen local administration and provide enhanced services. Sending additional representatives to Baghdad will allow us to fight collectively for better services and improved livelihoods for citizens.”
Mamand called on the people of Kirkuk to return to their city on election day and vote for the PUK List 222, stating: “This will make Kirkuk and its people proud.”
During the carnival, Rebwar Taha, head of PUK List 222 in Kirkuk constituency, delivered a speech emphasising the importance of Kirkuk’s voice in Baghdad: “We want Kirkuk’s voice to resonate strongly in the capital, ensuring that our influence within parliament reflects the needs of Kirkuk, Khanaqin, and other areas.”
Taha highlighted that the Iraqi parliament is where crucial national issues are addressed, underlining the importance of strong PUK representation. He also expressed concern over the continued reference to Kirkuk residents as “displaced persons”.
He said: “We no longer wish to be called displaced persons. We want our people to return to live among their families and communities in Kirkuk.”
