Latif Nerwayi, head of PUK Media Board.
Latif Nerwayi, Head of the Media Board of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the legacy of President Mam Jalal, highlighting his pivotal role in establishing Kurdish media and fostering an environment for independent journalism, stating: "Today, Sulaymaniyah is the capital of free and critical media."
Speaking on the anniversary of President Mam Jalal’s passing, Nerwayi emphasised the enduring significance of Kirkuk, noting that the city was central to President Mam Jalal’s vision throughout the struggle. He praised the PUK team in Kirkuk for their continued dedication to serving the city.
The PUK Media and Awareness Bureau paid tribute by laying a wreath at President Mam Jalal’s mausoleum. Nerwayi told the press: “We remain committed to continuing President Mam Jalal’s path.”
He reflected on the role of President Mam Jalal in the early days of Kurdish media development and said: “Even before the uprising, during the mountain struggle, President Mam Jalal recognised the vital role of media. That era marked a revival of Kurdish journalism, with the establishment of three printing houses, radio broadcasts, and numerous newspapers and booklets. Special media platforms were also created for women, writers and artists.”
“Following the uprising, the PUK under his leadership laid the foundation for modern Kurdish media, supporting independent journalism and fostering public discourse,” Nerwayi added. “Today, Sulaymaniyah is the capital of free and critical media, hosting the most independent press in the province.”
Regarding Kirkuk Nerwayi said: “The PUK’s message remains one of stability, coexistence, service and reconstruction. We will continue President Mam Jalal’s mission in Kirkuk, just as he always prioritised the city and sought to restore it to Kurdistan’s embrace. And now, the PUK team in Kirkuk continues to serve the city with dedication.”
Today, 3 October 2025, marks eight years since the passing of President Mam Jalal, Iraq’s first Kurdish and democratically elected President, and Secretary-General of the PUK, who passed away on 3 October 2017 following a period of illness.
