Iraq's Ministry of Environment announced on Sunday, 21 September 2025, the launch of five strategic documents for joint initiatives between Iraq and the United Nations, aimed at improving environmental conditions and addressing the impacts of climate change.
Environment Minister Dr. Halo Askari said in a statement received by PUKMEDIA that the government has given “exceptional attention to the environmental issue, moving from planning to implementation through comprehensive strategies that involve cooperation with the international community, the private sector, civil society organizations, and key ministries such as oil, electricity, and agriculture.”
He explained that the initiatives will be translated into practical programmes and projects to support the most vulnerable regions, particularly in the south, which face severe challenges including water scarcity, high salinity, expanding desertification, and worsening air and water pollution.
These pressures, he noted, are driving waves of migration from affected areas.
According to the statement, Ghulam Mohammad Isaczai, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, praised Iraq’s efforts, stressing that “harmony and coordination between the various parties opens new prospects for strengthening joint climate action and ensuring the success of these initiatives.”
