U.S. Congressman Abraham Hamadeh held a video call with the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, during which he highlighted the SDF’s role in safeguarding the northeastern third of Syria and establishing a decentralised model that has protected Christians, Arabs, Kurds, and others for over a decade.
Posting on the social media platform X, Congressman Hamadeh stated: "With over 100,000 fighters – both Arabs and Kurds – trained by US-led coalition forces, the SDF is a key part of Syria’s future. For over a decade, it has protected the northeast third of Syria, and established a decentralised model that protects Christians, Arabs, Kurds, and others."
He added: "The SDF seeks time and space to strengthen their inclusive governance framework in Syria’s interim process."
Congressman Hamadeh further reassured that negotiations between Damascus and the SDF are set to resume in Paris later this month, with the support of the Trump administration. He said that the talks aim to shift Syria away from the former regime’s failed policy of intimidation and retaliation, and towards a system rooted in the protection of rights and freedoms for all.
The Congressman also affirmed that the United States continues to maintain open lines of communication with all parties in Syria.
Furthermore Muller thanked General Mazloum and the interim government of Damascus for their continued assistance in the search for Kayla Mueller’s remains so she can finally be buried where she belongs, in her home state of Arizona.
Kayla Jean Mueller was an American human rights activist and humanitarian aid worker from Prescott, Arizona. She was kidnapped by the Islamic State (ISIS) in August 2013 after leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Aleppo, Syria. She was imprisoned, tortured, and later died in February 2015 while in ISIS captivity.
