Kidney Trafficking Gang Arrested in Sulaymaniyah

The Investigation Directorate of the Asayish Agency in the Kurdistan Region, in collaboration with the Asayish Directorate of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, has announced the arrest of a gang accused of defrauding citizens through the illicit trade of human kidneys.

In an official statement, the Investigation Directorate confirmed that four individuals were apprehended on the 7th and 8th of May 2025, following a detailed and targeted investigation in the city of Sulaymaniyah. The arrests were carried out based on multiple complaints submitted by affected citizens and were authorised by a decision from the Asayish investigative judge.

According to the statement, the suspects allegedly deceived five families into selling kidneys with the promise of financial compensation. In total, the group reportedly collected 32 million Iraqi dinars from their victims.

“The individuals are currently in custody under Article 456 of the Iraqi Penal Code,” the statement noted. “The investigation is ongoing, and further legal proceedings will follow as the case develops.”

Article 456 pertains to offences involving fraud and deception, under which the accused may face severe penalties if found guilty.

The Asayish Agency has reiterated its commitment to protecting public welfare and pursuing those involved in organised crime and exploitation. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities related to illegal organ trade or similar schemes.
