The decision by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), at its 12th Congress, to dissolve itself and bring an end to its armed struggle has been widely welcomed both internationally and across the region. In retrospect, it is evident that President Mam Jalal was among the founding figures of the peace process in Türkiye and Northern Kurdistan.
Reflecting on the early stages of the peace initiative in Türkiye, Dr. Dana Ahmed Mustafa—a writer and university lecturer—remarked:
“Anyone who contemplates peace, values human life, and considers the future of nations demonstrates a refined political intellect and a genuine love for humanity. In this spirit, President Mam Jalal consistently championed coexistence and urged the Kurdish people to take the lead in fostering peace among nations.”
He further stated: “What we are witnessing in Türkiye today, with the beginning of a new chapter in the Kurdish political movement, is very much rooted in foundations laid by President Mam Jalal—dating back to 1993.” He highlighted that President Mam Jalal had launched numerous similar initiatives across Iraqi communities and political factions, as well as on regional and international platforms.
Meanwhile, Karwan Yarwais, a member of the Iraqi Parliament representing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), said: “On this historic day, it is only right that we honour the noble soul of President Mam Jalal, a trailblazer who played a key role in initiating the peace process in Türkiye during the presidency of the late Turgut Özal.”
He added: “Today signifies the beginning of a vital new stage in the peace process and in the pursuit of a democratic resolution to our people’s legitimate cause in Northern Kurdistan. He demonstrated that the Kurds are a peace-loving people, always ready to embrace peaceful solutions when genuinely presented.”
