The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) spokesperson confirmed that meetings of the joint committee of the PUK and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to form the next government are ongoing, emphasising the importance of resolving past issues or they will reoccur in the next government.
PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire told a press conference on Saturday, 25 January 2025: "The PUK and the KDP's joint committee is continuing talks to create the next cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), where they will examine the matters on which they have disagreed in the past, as well as their future manner of working and governing together."
He said: "We cannot postpone everything indefinitely, complain about each other, and refuse to look for solutions to problems, so good steps have been taken in this regard, and once the work of the joint committee of the PUK and KDP is completed, the negotiating delegations of both sides will meet to discuss the draft project prepared by the joint committee."
He pointed out: "We've encountered troubles in the past. If we do not solve these problems, they will reoccur in the future."
"Therefore, the PUK emphasises that we are not finding positions for people, but rather finding people for positions, and that once the positions are determined, we will assign the right individuals to the right positions," he added.
He further stated: "There has been no debate between the PUK and the KDP. What is claimed concerning the distribution of positions is propaganda; the PUK does not want any positions unless there is agreement on the government's programme."
The PUK-KDP joint committee has previously met several times to create a draft project for the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Kurdistan parliamentary elections were held in October of last year, and the Kurdistan Region is currently awaiting the formation of its new cabinet.
It is anticipated that the two victorious parties, the PUK and the KDP, will come to an agreement to form the next government because a number of parties have already stated that they will function as opposition parties in the parliament.
