PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire.
The spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) announced on Tuesday, 14 January 2025, that meetings between the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to form the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) are ongoing, with the PUK insisting on appointing the right people for the right positions, and that no discussions about government positions have occurred.
PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire told PUKMEDIA that meetings between the PUK and KDP committees to form the next government are still ongoing as they are addressing technical issues such as responsibilities, the way and policies of working together, and issues that the KRG's new cabinet must prioritise.
"After the completion of that task, then the distribution of positions will be discussed, as there have been no discussions on the position between the PUK and KDP so far," he said.
He noted that while time is crucial for the establishment of a new government, the creation of a stable government that would provide peace and prosperity to the Kurdistan Region's citizens is more crucial.
Pire went on to say that the Kurdish people will no longer put up with their needs not being met, thus the next cabinet should have the appropriate people in the proper positions so that we can offer the people greater services.
“To resolve the issue of salaries, if the mistake, causing the delay of paying salaries, comes from the Iraqi government or from the KRG, it is important to have the courage to admit the mistake and assist each other to resolve it," he said.
He added: "Some people in Iraq don't want stability and prosperity in the Kurdistan Region, so it is important for the KRG to put more pressure on the Iraqi government, while also eliminating their own shortcomings."
Kurdistan parliamentary elections were held in October of last year, and the Kurdistan Region is currently awaiting the formation of its new cabinet.
It is anticipated that the two victorious parties, the PUK and the KDP, will come to an agreement to form the next government because a number of parties have already stated that they will function as opposition parties in the parliament.
As tensions between the KRG and the Iraqi federal government cause delays in the payment of civil servant salaries, which are currently a major issue in the Kurdistan Region, the PUK insists that the next government be service-oriented and prioritise the needs of the people.
