The spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) List 129 urges all parties participating in the 6th term of Kurdistan parliamentary elections to conduct their campaign in a peaceful manner.
Karwan Gazneyi, the official spokesperson for the PUK List 129, released a statement following a shooting inside a mosque in Erbil where Shalaw Kosrat Rasul, leader of the PUK List 129, was attending a funeral.
“Regrettably, this marks the second instance in recent days of attempts to disrupt the elections by evoking chaos because of fearing the elections,” Gazneyi said.
He added: "On Monday afternoon, September 30, 2024, during Shalaw Kosrat Rasul's attendance at the funeral of the late Tofiq Haji Hamaka, a member of a family that supports the PUK, a son of Qahari Sabir Alaka addressed Shalaw Kosrat Rasul inappropriately at the mosque."
He continued: "Shalaw Kosrat Rasul refrained from responding in respect to the mosque, as well as the social and religious customs of our nation and the family of the deceased, although this ugly behaviour has occurred two times this week, once at this mosque and once at Erbil Bazaar. Afterwards, Qahar's guards opened fire inside the mosque as Shalaw Kosrat Rasul was leaving."
"We view these actions as futile attempts to disrupt peace and delay the elections," he said, stressing that these actions clearly exemplify a fear of the elections and contradict their mottos, which proves that defeat awaits them.
"Once again, as the PUK, we emphasise holding a peaceful, civil, and democratic campaign. “We urge all parties to conduct a peaceful campaign,” Gazneyi added.
