The preparations for the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliamentary election are ongoing by the PUK, and the spokesperson for the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) said that the elections will take place without any delays.
A member of the PUK Leadership Council noted that there is substantial international pressure to guarantee that elections take place on time.
The IHEC is committed to the election deadline
IHEC Spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai told PUKMEDIA: "The claims about delaying the sixth term of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections are false, and the IHEC is fully dedicated to the election date established by the presidency, which is October 20, 2024."
"The IHEC continues to conduct the procedures for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections and is currently auditing the eligibility of the candidates; when the audit is completed, the Board of Commissioners will convene and determine the commencement date for the election campaign," she stated.
There is international pressure to hold elections
Salar Sarhad Khalifa, PUK Leadership Council, told PUKMEDIA: "The PUK has diligently coordinated the necessary arrangements for the elections, and the rumours regarding the postponement of the elections are unfounded. Those parties are disseminating rumours out of fear of the elections."
"There is international pressure to hold the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, so they must take place on the date set by the president," he said.
The Kurdistan parliamentary elections for the sixth term are scheduled for October 20, 2024, and will feature 139 coalitions, parties, lists, and independent candidates.
124 candidates have registered, including 85 independents, 20 Turkmen, and 19 Christians. The Turkmen candidates are divided into two groups: 14 from Erbil and 6 from Sulaymaniyah. The 19 Christian candidates are divided into three constituencies: Erbil (7), Sulaymaniyah (4), and Duhok (8).
