The Minister of Environment in the Federal Government, Nizar Amedi, held a meeting with Stephen Hitchen, the British Ambassador to Iraq; Oliver Christian, the British Majesty's Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Pakistan; Damian Allinson, the British Government's Trade Negotiator; and Nour al-Rasheed, the Iraqi Trade Advisor.
The purpose of the meeting was to review the technical proposals from companies specialising in surveying and mine clearance, as well as to explore opportunities for mutual cooperation in the areas of energy, climate change, and carbon economics.
Amedi emphasised the significance of maintaining contracts with companies specialised in this field, as well as the need to use clear and open criteria to choose the most appropriate partner for the British loan.
His explanation was that the British loan is intended to assist the Iraqi Mine Action Authority in their endeavours to eliminate mines and cleanse polluted fields, therefore promoting security and stability development in the affected regions. He noted that the Mine Action Authority has finalised all maps of polluted regions pertaining to the loan criteria. These maps have been distributed to companies with British background to solicit their bids for technical survey, removal, and quality control services.
Additionally, the meeting addressed collaboration in the domains of energy, water resources, and climate change. The Minister of Environment affirmed that Iraq is actively collaborating with the Ministry of Oil on carbon bonds and the establishment of a carbon economics firm within the so-called carbon economy.
Furthermore, they deliberated on Iraq's involvement in the "COP 28" climate summit hosted in Dubai, highlighting Iraq's dedication to enhancing global endeavours in tackling environmental issues.
Both sides emphasised the need for ongoing collaboration between Iraq and the United Kingdom in the realms of environment and economy to enhance development initiatives that promote infrastructure improvement and assist in achieving sustainability. The British Ambassador conveyed the country's preparedness to offer further assistance to Iraq in addressing environmental issues, stressing the United Kingdom's dedication to enhancing the collaboration with Iraq in order to successfully attain sustainable development objectives.
