Dr. Yousif Goran: Stature, Standing of Kurds in Kirkuk Cannot be Disregarded

Concerned about the volatile situation in Kirkuk, the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) General Studies Center asserts, "The federal government's role in preventing the marginalization of the Kurdish population in Kirkuk is crucial."

Dr. Yousif Goran, the head of the PUK's General Studies Center, issued the following statement regarding the recent unrest in Kirkuk: "No party or force can disregard the stature and standing of the Kurds in Kirkuk. Those who do not recognize Kurdish rights will not do any better than the Iraqi regimes that came before them."

He stated, "The federal government must immediately fulfill its constitutional obligation." The importance of their role in preventing the marginalization of the Kurdish people in Kirkuk cannot be overstated.

"It is critical that the steadfast people of Kirkuk and all Kurdish parties unite in defending the rights of the Kurds of Kirkuk and do not allow this direction to be diverted for different political and regional agendas," he said.

The PUK opposes Kirkuk road closures and protests

The message that was delivered to the three Iraqi presidencies from the PUK faction in the Iraqi parliament reads as follows:

Mr. Prime Minister of Iraq,
Mr. Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives

Ladies and Gentlemen, Kirkuk is in turmoil as a result of demonstrators opposing the evacuation of the Iraqi Joint Forces Command facility in Kirkuk and its transfer to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) closing the main road between Kirkuk and Erbil.

We, the PUK faction in the Iraqi parliament, are opposed to the closure of the main road connecting Kirkuk and Erbil, which has placed a significant burden on citizens, and we urge you to take immediate action to restore order in Kirkuk.

Furthermore, we urge Kirkuk residents of all communities to exercise restraint and not jeopardize the city's stability and civil coexistence for the sake of political gain for certain parties.

As the PUK faction, we will use all legal means to punish anyone who attempts to complicate the situation in Kirkuk.
