President Jalal Talabani’s life journey from 1947 to 2017 has framed his legacy as a leader for all, as he was a leader who brought people together and bridged differences while many have existed. 3 October 2026 is another sad anniversary for us all, as Talabani wasn’t just a Peshmerga, but a president, a political leader, and a well-known diplomat. In addition, to being a unifying figure who brought everyone together despite their differences. Today, people remember a leader whose absence is still strongly felt in Kurdistan, Iraq, and the wider region, while national and regional challenges are confronting the wider Middle East far more than before.
President Talabani was a rare figure on the revolutionary scene in modern Kurdish politics, and he has played an unprecedented and historic role in Iraq's political process after 2003. Talabani has been the president who not only represented his own nation but also became a point where Sunnis, Shiites, Arabs, Kurds, and all other religious, and ethnic groups could come together, a point where differences have met. For his active role in keeping balance and preventing sectarian conflicts, he was proudly given the title of “the Safety Valve” (Sam am al-Aman).
Talabani has a peculiar wisdom and vision, who has set out a political roadmap based on consensus and a balance of differences. He played a key role in rewriting Iraq's permanent constitution in 2005 and securing the Kurdish people's legitimate rights in that constitution, while he has insisted on enforcing the rule of law in Iraq for the good of the people.
President Talabani has always believed in dialogue, even with his political opponents, as his trust in peace and stability has been a priority in keeping the public good as top governance priority during and in the post-conflict phases in Iraq. Meanwhile, at the local level in Kurdistan, his ongoing efforts to bring the Kurdish community together, solving political and party disputes made him a national go-to figure for entangled crises.
Under his governance between 2005-2014, Talabani led Iraq from a devastated phase to a phase of being a country after years of conflict and crises. People’s trust in Talabani has been a source of inspiration for him, while for Talabani, peace, security, and economic stability have been means for securing a better life that people in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq deserve. People in all corners of Iraq remember Talabani as he was the leader who lived with and for the people.
Today, as the region, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region face a sensitive and challenging period politically and economically, the absence of President Talabani is more noticeable than ever. Might this day become a chance to reflect on political dialogue and go back to the values Talabani devoted his life to: unity, coexistence, respecting differences, and continuous efforts to achieve national rights through peace and dialogue. His memory will always shine brightly at the heart of our nation's history.
